The renovation of Athabasca University’s Science labs has provided staff and students with bright, spacious, inviting spaces within the existing building shell.

The project is a renovation of 745 sm of the University’s main floor into modern research and teaching labs and support spaces. Although much student work is done away from the Campus, using the lab kits prepared at the University, a portion of student course work is done on site. The new labs also provide staff with the facilities needed to pursue their own research.

Research Labs for Geology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Physics and Biology are complemented by a bright and attractive 30-Student lab, for visiting student groups. An open area under the skylight adjacent to the mezzanine stairs, was chosen as the location for “The Den”, a meeting area conducive to informal communication and social engagement.

Athabasca University’s new science labs were officially opened on March 4, 2011.

“The renovated science labs are a remarkable success. Now students and researchers can work unimpeded, using the best equipment and technologies. Our students have recently had the opportunity to take classes in a variety of courses (biology, anatomy and microbiology) in the renewed teaching labs, and just to see their faces as they enter and marvel at the space, the biological murals and their work benches is a testament that we will serve them well.” - Dr. Lisa Carter, Dean, Faculty of Science and Technology, Athabasca University
