The Town of Beaverlodge engaged Manasc Isaac to create a new stand-alone library to replace a smaller, overcrowded facility. Given that the new site’s neighbours include an RCMP detachment, a school, two churches and other institutions, we approached the design of the library as an urban design exercise. Our goal is to create a facility that serves several purposes – a place to gain knowledge, to meet friends, and that contributes to the cultural life of the Town. Given the linear site, we will create a type of ‘interior street’ that serves to organize all the program elements. The linear configuration will also open the building to natural light and reduce solar heat gain, thereby reducing operational costs.
Program elements include traditional fare like books, magazines and videos, as well as internet capability. A dedicated multipurpose room with a separate entrance will extend facility use into the evening hours. The library’s front-of-house functions (entry, circulation desk, and lounge) are designed to be welcoming, serving as a gathering place for the residents of Beaverlodge.
