Calder School ModernizationEdmonton, AB, Canada

This K-6 elementary school was originally constructed in the 1920s. Since the 1970s there have only been minor renovations made to the building.
When planning the modernization through consultation with teachers, parents and community members, it quickly became apparent that it was important to users that the original main entrance be restored. By opening the library to the entrance, the school became livelier, more dynamic and more clearly a 21st Century learning environment.
This modernization project for Edmonton Public Schools included an upgrade to the interior image, replacement of mechanical and electrical systems, redesign of the front entrance and library, renovations to the learning resource centre and upgrades to the building envelope. Construction was phased to allow on-going operation of the school.
"We are impressed that you involved students, staff and parents in a series of planning workshops…The parents were absolutely thrilled to see that the ideas they had shared for their children’s school were becoming a reality."
Carol Zbitnew, Principal Calder School
