The new East Edmonton Health Care Centre provides a range of medical and community services to residents of central Edmonton.
On June 24, 2010, members of the community, staff, clients and dignitaries celebrated the official opening of the new East Edmonton Health Centre.
“Health centres such as these are the cornerstones of our local primary health-care delivery models,” says Dr. Stephen Duckett, president and chief
executive officer, Alberta Health Services (AHS). “This location has allowed us to consolidate services into one convenient location for families, improving their ability to access quality care.”
The new facility is located on the grounds of the former Cromdale School (7910-112 Ave) and replaces the nearby Eastwood Public Health Centre. Serving a population of more than 62,000, which includes more than 7,000 seniors and 9,000 students in 25 schools, the $44-million health centre meets the current and future needs of east Edmonton communities.
The new centre has more than 130 staff members, such as public health staff; registered nurses and licensed practical nurses; pediatric and mental health specialists; home care staff; respiratory, occupational and physical therapists; as well as social workers and rehabilitation assistants.
The 60,000-square-foot site is a one-stop shop where a dedicated health-care team provides multiple services. Current programs and services include:
• Healthy Young Families Services;
• Community Perinatal Program;
• School Health;
• Speech and Language Services;
• Pediatric Development and Mental Health;
• Chronic Disease Management classes;
• Communicable Disease Control;
• Home Care; and
• Community space for health education activities.
The East Edmonton Health Centre will continue to expand, with planned growth including the opening of urgent care and family medicine services.
In size, form and appearance, the new Centre relates to the historical Cromdale School which was incorporated into the overall design. The building contributes to a pedestrian-friendly neighbourhood by retaining the majority of the mature trees on the site, maintaining the building height at a scale comparable to its neighbours and maximizing green space.
Inspired by other modern buildings in this neighbourhood, as well as by the active engagement of the community, and by the vision of this sustainable, the new health centre is both contemporary and traditional.
"Manasc Isaac immediately understood the issues and challenges of the East Edmonton Health Centre project and articulated a clear set of resolutions. Not only did this firm provide a beautiful and functional design they had the skill set and depth to help steer the project through the sensitivities of the community consultations and city planning and zoning processes."
