Sustainable features are integrated at every level of the design. Most impressive is the building’s prominent, award-winning curtainwall-integrated Photo-Voltaic (solar energy panels) system, the largest in Canada when the building opened in October 2005, and the second largest in the world. Water use is reduced by more than 60% and annual energy use is an outstanding 58.6% below the model baseline.
Greenstone scored a near perfect 9/10 rating for energy savings on its final LEED® score. That translates into more than $80,000 in energy savings per year for Canadian taxpayers, while reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are calculated to be more than 370 tonnes per year.
The building also features a green roof and downtown Yellowknife’s only outdoor public green space.
