The scope of this project inlcuded the design and construction of a new high school that would successfully bring all of the amenities from Memorial Composite High School into a larger, more comfortable space. The new school brings together 1500 students and 100 staff, not only from Memorial Composite High School, but from other rural schools in the area. The high school occupies the entire Westerra Campus, incorporating the existing Westerra Building and site and providing additions to accommodate a gymnasium and science wing. The completed high school is a varied, enjoyable, healthy, innovative and inspiring environment for students, parents and the community, leading to a bright and prosperous future for high school students in the Stony Plain community.
In keeping with Alberta Infrastructure’s sustainable buildings policy, this building is designed to meet the Silver level of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) rating system of the Canada Green Building Council and will serve as the first of many steps towards a “green” future for the Town of Stony Plain.
This project was recently awarded the Outstanding Design Award - School Building Addition / Modernization from the Pacific Northwest Region of CEFPI from The Council of Educational Facility Planners in 2011.

“The school does not have an institutional feeling...It has a fresh and cosmopolitan look. Because of the environmental initiatives and LEED system in the school, some of the students created an environmental club. They have raised awareness throughout the school about how to be sustainable and environmentally friendly. They have a garden in the back field and have built quite the following. We love that there are no lockers in the science wing. It shows students that the area is reserved for learning.” - Rod Strangway, Assistant Principal
“This room has great acoustics. This is a very well designed space. We love everything about the space.” - Mr. Weisenburger, Music Teacher
“The central vacuum system works very well. The space has been amazing.” - Mr. Pratt, Construction Teacher
