The Peguis First Nation, located north of Winnipeg, is the largest First Nation community in Manitoba. Manasc Isaac designed their new K4-12 school in two phases to accommodate 1200 students.
Phase I includes the elementary and kindergarten wing. A two-storey, load-bearing masonry structure has clerestory windows to the upper walkway. A large overhang along the south façade and a roofed walkway from the kindergarten to the main entrance provide seasonal protection.
Phase II includes the junior and senior high school wings, gymnasium, home economics, industrial arts and support areas.
The exterior masonry cladding was chosen to create strong and robust design and to make use of the local Masonry Trades Training Programme. The use of colour in the masonry and steel sun shading elements will make this a bright a cheerful place to visit, work and learn. Designed and built with maximum local involvement, this significant building addresses the culture and future of Peguis.
