Manasc Isaac completed renovations to Pembina Hall, one of the oldest buildings at the University of Alberta, converting it into academic space for the Department of East Asian Studies, the School of Native Studies and the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies.
Although this project is a modernization to current standards, we have retained its exterior historic appearance and 'story-telling' presence on the U of A campus, as well as restoring fine interior architectural details. The building now incorporates environmentally-sensitive strategies including minimization of energy consumption, waste reduction and management and use of materials with reduced environmental impact.
-
Phase I included the removal of hazardous materials, the addition of an elevator, significant mechanical and code upgrades and other renovations needed to make the building work as an effective academic environment.
-
Phase II was primarily involved third and fourth floor interior work, a complete window replacement and the restoration of existing exterior masonry walls and entryways. The finishes and renovations are similar to those of Phase I, yet allow each particular department to express its own style and distinctiveness. Environmentally sensitive and sustainability strategies are an integral component of the design.
