This new community hub and government centre is a one-stop, service-oriented landmark for the citizens of the Slave Lake region. The combined public space is home to a Town Hall, a public library, and provincial government offices. Thirteen different Provincial Government departments are included in this project that required the design of both the base building and the tenant improvements.
The centrally-located facility is a permanent anchor for the town, revitalizing the downtown area while enhancing the presence of provincial government services. Participants in a design workshop led by Manasc Isaac envisioned a functional, accessible, convenient and healthy facility, adaptable to changing workplace needs. This building was designed to achieve a LEED® Silver minimum certification.
This new facility was unfortunately completely destroyed, amongst hundreds of others, during the recent forest fires that ravaged the Town of Slave Lake in May, 2011.
Since then, the Town is proceeding with the reconstruction of Slave Lake Government Centre and Library.
“The building is the Town centerpiece…The ceilings in the council chamber and the courtrooms are quite stunning…Library enrolment has increased and it has become a magnet for residents of all ages.” - Mayor Karina Pillay-Kinnee, Town of Slave Lake
“This is a building that works. The Slave Lake Government Centre and Library is a first-class, well planned, sustainable building that will support the people who use it and work there by enabling efficient delivery of key services.” - Honourable Ray Danyluk, Minister of Infrastructure, Government of Alberta
“The new Slave Lake Government Center and Library is a powerful example of what can be accomplished when communities and government work together...This facility is going to serve the people of Slave Lake and the surrounding area very well for many years to come.” - Pearl Calahasen, MLA for Lesser Slave Lake
