This building features:
  • Significant re-use of existing building and existing materials ;
  • 100% green electricity;
  • High efficiency boiler to supply radiant heating;
  • Operable windows and open design to allow air to flow freely and assist with heating and cooling;
  • Energy efficient light bulbs and increased natural light to optimize lighting requirements;
  • Low flow toilets, waterless urinals and sensor-activated taps to reduce water loss;
  • Increased insulation and roof replacement to secure building envelope;
  • Recycling stations to collect paper, metal, and organic waste throughout the building;
  • Car pool parking and bicycle racks to encourage alternative transportation; and
  • Expanded garden areas have been planted with drought-resistant trees and shrubs. Indoors, large tropical plants were selected for their air cleaning abilities.

Success:
  • This was the first renovation in Canada to achieve LEED® Certified status.
  • Natural gas bills have decreased by 36% since the project’s completion.
  • Water use has been cut by 78%.
