EPCOR Trolley SubstationEdmonton , AB , Canada

|
The brick substation was built to house modern trolley bus switchgear equipment on EPCOR's Rossdale operations site in Edmonton’s beautiful river valley. The substation was designed to reflect the history and architecture of the neighbourhood and to create a new gateway into downtown Edmonton.
The main objective of the substation project was to use the preliminary design guidelines to set the tone and quality for future development of the site. The building fits into the overall park setting while offsets the utilitarian character of other buildings on the site.
Materials include masonry, steel trellis and soft landscaping. These materials and strategies are in keeping with the character of the Rossdale site. Window and wall treatments for the substation are respectful of historical detailing and are constructed with pre-cast sills and metal security screens as seen on other buildings in the area. Mechanical equipment is kept off the roof in order to provide a clean roofscape visible from the nearby ball field and river valley lookout points. Mechanical systems are appropriately landscaped to buffer equipment and noise.
