Modern Catholic symbolism is the basis for the look and feel of Father Leduc K-9 School. The space reflects Saint Thomas Aquinas Roman (STAR) Catholic School Division's leadership in the local community through a design that is simple, timeless, and meaningful. The building's design and shape take advantage of its prominent corner location and reaches out toward the community through the overhang volume that extends the learning commons room over the exterior gathering space - a subtle, yet effective welcoming for occupants and visitors alike. The cross-like shape of the building and its orientation on the site, connecting its entrances with site access points, is a design solution that incorporates the knowledge shared by stakeholders who understood the importance and impact of occupants' flow within the building and on the site.

This new K-9 school was designed to accommodate contemporary teaching and learning approaches in this new neighbourhood. Extensive consultation with teachers, students, neighbours, and the community at large resulted in a school that is uniquely responsive to the needs, including accommodation for large numbers of school buses and parent drop-off areas. Designed to LEED Silver standards, this sustainable new building will be a source of pride in the community for years to come.

The manner in which students are dropped off and picked up from the school posed a significant challenge. Workshop participants identified several strategies to address these concerns. Student entrances were strategically placed to integrate the drop-off points with specific classroom locations. Separating the site's three primary flows of traffic (i.e. buses, parent pick-up/drop-off, and staff) was also considered. As such, the design takes advantage of its corner location, creating clearly defined parent pick-up/drop-off and staff parking areas from the bus loading area.

The two-storey configuration of the school also maximizes the size of the school despite site constraints.
