Hearthstone Affordable Housing meets an important need for the community of Grande Prairie, offering barrier-free housing, accommodation that builds dignity and self-esteem for those undergoing life transitions.

Hearthstone’s community design consists of a main floor that houses communal amenities such as a kitchen, dining area and lounge. Upstairs, residents are offered semi-private and private lounges, bachelor suites and family apartments, meeting a wide range of resident requirements.

The project’s limited budget did not compromise the integrity of the building’s design. Instead, affordability and sustainability inform the project together.

Sustainable features include a high efficiency heating system, thoughtful building orientation to maximize daylight, low-flow fixtures and locally sourced and recycled materials.

Because our designer, Alejandro Perez, so thoroughly worked through several challenges, we have a building that appears to contain more than the budget allowed. The overall result is a building with an exuberant modesty that fits in well with its neighbourhood. The real winners are the residents. — Myron Nebozuk, Architect
